Background to CarersConnect!

Lynne
From a very early age I was accustomed to zimmer frames and commodes, my four siblings and I used the outdoor handrails as our own gymnasium and Christmas Day was shared with 40 elderly people with visual impairment. Mum was Matron of the residential home, completing thirty years before she retired, and her vocation probably influenced me far more than I realised... I worked in residential child care for two years, finally qualifying as an Education Welfare Officer. Allocated my patch in inner-city Leeds, once the shock of my induction had subsided I gained invaluable insight into the difficulties of others and the strengths and weaknesses of the human spirit over the next few years.

Two children, ten years involved in manufacturing; a divorce; ten years in the fashion trade, and then redundancy arrived. Starting up now as a freelance bookkeeper, I imagined I had finally got things sussed when my life suddenly came full circle... my frail elderly parents came to share my home and presented me with a totally different set of challenges! Alongside the sheer frustration, sadness, depression, loneliness and guilt I have experienced laughter, love, pride, compassion and extreme gratitude for the kindness of those who have supported us. I feel the luxuries of recreation and relaxation for the carer and care sector workers are crucial elements in the success of any prolonged caring situation. Hence my idea for this site. We truly hope you find some quality time-out here.

Warm regards
Lynne
